WHAT'S HAPPENING IN AUGUST AT THE FLORIDA STATE FAIRGROUNDS

[NEWS RELEASE] TAMPA, FL. - July 20, 2009.  The summer continues to sizzle with a variety of entertaining indoor and outdoor events taking place near the corner of I-4 and U.S. Highway 301 in eastern Hillsborough County. A brief listing of the upcoming month's events is provided followed by a detailed event description.

July 31-Aug. 2: Super Liquidation Sale
A three-day general merchandise sale will take place inside the Charles M. Davis Special Events Center. Event hours are Friday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, children ages 12 and younger are admitted free. Parking is $5 per car or $10 per RV or bus for each time a vehicle enters the grounds. Visitors should enter the Fairgrounds via the M.L.K., Jr. Blvd. entrance. Aug. 1: Hands-On History Tours for Youth Groups (ongoing monthly)
Held in Cracker Country, the hands-on history tours for youth groups are offered the first Saturday of every month, except in February, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Cracker Country. Give your youth organization the opportunity to learn about the past and become a part of it. Led by knowledgeable historical interpreters, kids can spend the morning experiencing life as a Florida pioneer through hands-on chores and practices of the late 1800's. The tour cost is $5 for students ages six to twelve and one chaperone is admitted free for every 10 paid admissions. Youth groups may stay after the tour to enjoy the new “Discover the Past” program at no additional cost. Reservations are required in advance with a 10-student minimum per group. Aug. 1: Discover the Past (ongoing monthly)
Imagine what it was like for settlers of rural Florida living in 1898 -- use your senses of sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing to relive this time from Florida's past. The event is held in Cracker Country on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (except in February). It is a fun way for families to spend an enjoyable day together by learning new activities like churning butter and tasting it, making a rope, spinning wool into yarn, or helping to plant crops. Adult admission is $6, children ages six to 12 years old and senior citizens enter for $5, and kids five and under are admitted free. Parking is free for this event when visitors enter the Fairgrounds via the Orient Road entrance. Reservations are not necessary for this event. Aug. 1: Bay Area Convoy of Hope
The Brandon Assembly of God will host a free community service event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Expo Hall and Sweetbay Entertainment Hall. There will be free activities including health screenings, haircuts, grocery giveaways, family photos, lunch and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.Parking is complimentary for this event only courtesy of the Fairgrounds. Aug. 8: Youth Steer Futurity Calf Sale
Youth, parents, and teachers will take part in a one-day seminar for the Youth Steer Futurity Calf Sale to be held in the Ag Hall of Fame and Charlie Lykes Arena at the Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees will choose their steers to take home and raise throughout the year in preparation for the 2010 Florida State Fair competition. Aug. 8: Alligator Harvest Training & Orientation Seminar
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is offering alligator hunters a free class from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Florida Center to help them prepare for the upcoming statewide alligator harvest period from Aug. 15-Nov. 1.  Reservations are not required to attend the class.  Attendance is not mandatory for licensed hunters, but the FWC recommends participants attend, especially if they have not experienced alligator hunting. Parking is complimentary for this event only courtesy of the Fairgrounds. Visitors should enter the Fairgrounds via the Orient Road entrance. The seminar is also an opportunity for hunters who have never participated in the state's alligator hunts to learn what hunting alligators is all about. Aug. 8: Concert - Kenny Chesney
Kenny Chesney will perform in concert with special guests Miranda Lambert and Lady Antebellum on Saturday, August 8 at the Ford Amphitheatre. The gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $80 for reserved seating and $39.50 for each lawn area ticket. The lawn area is general admission; no specific area is assigned for seating. Aug. 8-9: Suncoast Gun Show & Sale
One of Florida's premier gun shows returns to the Charles M. Davis Special Events Center for two days. The Suncoast Gun Show and Sale features firearms-related accessories including gun parts, gun-related tools, knives, cases, locks, cartridge boxes and belts, and ammunition for collectors. Show hours are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, children 12 and younger are admitted free. All persons under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The Concealed Weapons/Firearms Safety Course fee is $45 per person. The classes are offered on both days at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and last approximately 2 hours. All students must attend the range training and the range fee is $5. Appointments are not needed for these classes, nor are firearms. Parking is $5 per car or $10 per RV or bus for each time a vehicle enters the grounds. Aug. 8-9: Southeast Hunter Jumper Horse Show
The Southeast Hunter Jumper (SEHJ) Association will host a two-day horse competition held in the Gran Prix Ring and Pony Ring at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center.  The show starts at 8 a.m. each day.  Competitions will be held in hunter and jumper divisions for children and adult categories with prizes to be awarded.  Entry fees vary based on the entry category.  Participants must pre-register and fees must be paid with entry submission.  Admission and parking are free for spectators.  Participants and visitors should enter the Fairgrounds via the Orient Road entrance.  For more information, visit online http://www.sehj.com/ or call Eric Lavin at 352-797-7469 prior to the event. Aug. 9: Concert - Coldplay
Coldplay will perform in concert on Sunday, August 9 at the Ford Amphitheatre. The gates will open at 6 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $104.33 and $85.07 for reserved seating, $104.33 for the PIT area,  $37.45 for lawn area seating and $99 for a 4-pack of lawn tickets. Both the PIT area and lawn area are general admission; no specific area is assigned for seating. Aug. 11: Concert - Mayhem Festival
ROCKSTAR Energy Drink presents the Mayhem Festival on Tuesday, August 11 at the Ford Amphitheatre with performances by Marilyn Manson, Slayer and many more supporting acts. The gates will open at 1 p.m. and concert begins at 2:15 p.m. Ticket prices are $99, $53.25, $43.25, and $27.50 for reserved seating, $53.25 for the PIT area, $25 for lawn area seating and $79 for a 4-pack of lawn tickets. The Dave Matthews Band will perform in concert with special guest Robert Earl Keen on Wednesday, August 12 at the Ford Amphitheatre. Incubus will perform in concert with special guest, The Duke Spirit, on Saturday, August 15 at the Ford Amphitheatre. Aug. 22-23: Buckler's Craft Fair
Held in the Sweetbay Entertainment Hall for two days, the Buckler's Craft Fair offers one-of-a-kind creations and handmade crafts from some of the finest artisans in the nation.  Exhibitors will be selling unique items including country-primitive handmade furniture, homemade fudge, gourmet delights, home accessories, gold and silver jewelry, personalized items, pet merchandise and much more. Show hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adult admission is $6, children ages four to 12 enter for $1, and ages three and younger are admitted free. Suncoast Dressage hosts a two-day, USEF/USDF recognized horse show at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center.  Event hours vary daily for each competition. Aug. 28: Concert - Crue Fest 2
Motley Crue headlines the Crue Fest 2 concert with special guest performances by Godsmack, Theory of a Deadman, and Drowning Pool on Friday, August 28 at the Ford Amphitheatre. Doors open at 4 p.m. and concert begins at 5 p.m. Ticket prices are $95, $65, $39.50 and $25 for reserved seating, $95 for the PIT area, $29.50 for lawn area seating and $60 for a 6-pack of lawn tickets. Aug. 29-30: World's Largest Garage Sale
Rock the Mike Productions presents a two-day, huge garage sale event showcasing more than 400 booths of merchandise inside the Expo Hall and outdoor displays with assortment of vehicles and water crafts.  There will be a business trade show area, a health and wellness section with free screenings and exhibitors, a music stage with live celebrity karaoke, and free giveaways every hour. Business owners will be liquidating inventory at discounts up to 75% off regular prices for items including jewelry, adult and kids clothing, appliances, tires, electronics, computers, furniture, collectibles, antiques, paintings, hobby toys, bicycles, motorcycles, sporting gear, walkers and wheelchairs, records, CDs, musical equipment and much more. A portion of the proceeds will benefit a local organization -- Somebody Cares Tampa Bay. Event hours are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The live celebrity karaoke will be held on Saturday only from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. and the health and wellness speakers will be there from 3 to 5 p.m. on the same day. Adult admission is $5 for ages 18 and older or free for ages 17 and younger when accompanied by an adult. OTHER FAIRGROUNDS NEWS:  The 2010 Florida State Fair will take place on February 4-15, 2010 for twelve consecutive days. Vendor space applications for the next Florida State Fair are now available online at http://www.floridastatefair.com/vendor-application. All interested applicants are advised to print, complete and send in their applications immediately as space is limited for new vendors!

The Florida State Fair Authority is a non-profit organization which operates primarily from revenues generated from the annual State Fair and other ongoing operations during the year.  Presently, the FSFA does not receive any state tax appropriations from Hillsborough County, City of Tampa, nor the State of Florida.  The FSFA operates the Florida State Fairgrounds year-round in association with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  Agriculture Commissioner Charles H. Bronson leads the Fair Authority Board, which oversees the Florida State Fairgrounds and the annual Florida State Fair.
